What is a thriller?

A thriller is defined as 'A type of film which portrays crimes and murders in an exciting way'.
There are many different variations of the thriller genre and thrillers come in alternate forms. What determines a thriller from other genres of film are the high levels of tension and suspense which the audience experiences over the duration of the film. Moreover, there are thriller - hybrids whereby two alternate genres of book and film are combined to create a new genre, for example sci- fi thrillers, horror thrillers, action adventure thrillers, psychological thrillers and many more.
Here is an example of a movie poster advertising the Thriller film, 'Inception'.
